"If I bring a sword on that land"

Text: Ezekiel 14:17

THE THREAT OF WAR

The false prophets assured Israel that there would be no war. Life would be normal because they had visions to share with Israel. These were nothing but lies. The LORD warned Israel that He would bring a sword to the land.

“Or if I bring a sword on that land, and say,
‘Sword, go through the land,’
and I cut off man and beast from it,
even though these three men were in it, as I live,’ says the Lord God,
‘they would deliver neither sons nor daughters,
but only they themselves would be delivered.'”
Ezekiel 14:17-18

1. Another very real threat.

a) The Babylonian empire was growing.

b) They had already conquered many nations.

c) They were targeting Judah (Israel) next.

2. Bringing the sword on the land.

a) It depends on the Lord God.

b) It does not depend on the sayings of the false prophets!

c) If God were to send the sword, what could anyone do?

3. The three righteous men.

a) Noah, Daniel and Job were in mind.

b) Would they be able to deliver the land?

i) On the basis of their prayers?

ii) For the sake of their righteousness?

iii) Could they somehow persuade God not to send the sword on the land?

4. The sobering but clear answer from God.

a) No!

b) They would not be able to deliver anyone.

c) They would not be able to deliver their own sons and daughters.

d) They would only be able to deliver themselves.

e) They had a good standing in the sight of God!
