Encouragement To Pursue Wisdom

The example of the Lord

The pursuit of wisdom is never easy. The author of Proverbs recognised this and sought to provide every encouragement through the example of the Lord, “The LORD by wisdom founded the earth; by understanding He established the heavens; by His knowledge the depths were broken up. And clouds drop down the dew.” (Proverbs 3:19–20)

It is amazing that God Himself employed wisdom in His creation of the world. It was not something done randomly or incidentally. There is intelligent design in what we see in creation. God applied His deep understanding in creating the majestic heavens. The Lord also used His vast knowledge to make the deep oceans and glorious clouds in the sky. If God employed wisdom, understanding and knowledge, then we should be encouraged to seek wisdom diligently.

Encouragement to keep wisdom

“My son, let them not depart from your eyes—Keep sound wisdom and discretion;” (Proverbs 3:21)

  1. The challenge is for us to employ the Lord’s wisdom, understanding and knowledge.
  2. We are encouraged to make every effort to pursue them.
  3. Solomon also encouraged us to hold fast to these words of wisdom.
  4. Our hope is that wisdom would be placed before us and not depart from our eyes.
  5. Let us be challenged to keep sound wisdom and discretion in our lives.

The blessings that come from keeping wisdom

  1. Life…“So they will be life to your soul” (Proverbs 3:22a)
    1. Our hope is that true wisdom from God would bring life to our soul.
    2. It would make us come alive.
  2. Grace…“And grace to your neck.” (Proverbs 3:22b)
    1. Wisdom would also produce graciousness in our lives.
    2. This grace would be evidenced to all.
  3. Safety…“Then you will walk safely in your way, and your foot will not stumble.” (Proverbs 3:23)
    1. The Lord would keep us safe wherever we go.
    2. In everything that we do, our hope is that we would not stumble.
  4. Sleep…“When you lie down, you will not be afraid; Yes, you will lie down and your sleep will be sweet.” (Proverbs 3:24)
    1. Wisdom helps us not to be fearful or troubled by the problems of life.
    2. Our desire is to find peace from the Lord, to lie down and experience sweet sleep.
  5. No fear…“Do not be afraid of sudden terror, nor of trouble from the wicked when it comes;” (Proverbs 3:25)
    1. There may be times in which we will encounter wickedness in our lives.
    2. We hope that wisdom will help us not be afraid but find stillness in our hearts and minds.

We have every encouragement to seek wisdom.

The Lord will be our confidence

“For the Lord will be your confidence, and will keep your foot from being caught.” (Proverbs 3:26)

As we seek wisdom in our lives, we would discover that at the end of our pursuit, we will find the Lord as our confidence. Through all these blessings from the Lord, He is involved in our lives and provides all we need to face life’s challenges. Our hope is that through His wisdom, the Lord would make us come alive, fill us with grace, keep us safe, help us find stillness and not be daunted or afraid of those who are wicked. Let us be encouraged and diligent to continue pursuing wisdom in our life and ministry.
