Leviticus 26:40-46

THE POSSIBILITY OF THE INIQUITY OF THE PEOPLE

1. Accumulation of the iniquity of the people Leviticus 26:40

a. The sins of Israel
b. The sins of their fathers

2. The aspects of the iniquity of the people

a. With regards to God Leviticus 26:40
i. Unfaithfulness to God
ii. Walking contrary to the Lord
b. With regards to their hearts Leviticus 26:41
i. Uncircumcised / Uncleansed hearts
ii. Hardened hearts
c. With regards to the word Leviticus 26:43
i. They despise His word
ii. Their soul hated the word

3. Results of their sins and iniquity

a. Guilty before the Lord God Leviticus 26:41,43
b. God’s judgment on the iniquity of the people Leviticus 26:41

THE PROVISION OF FORGIVENESS

1. His covenant

a. His commitment to His covenant
“Then I will remember My covenant with Jacob, and My covenant with Isaac and My covenant with Abraham I will remember; I will remember the land.”
Leviticus 26:42
b. His mercy shown in not breaking His covenant
“Yet for all that, when they are in the land of their enemies, I will not cast them away, nor shall I abhor them, to utterly destroy them and break My covenant with them;”

“For I am the LORD their God…”

THE PLEA FOR FORGIVENESS

1. The “If” part

a. If they confess their sins
“But if they confess their iniquity and the iniquity of their fathers…”

b. If they humble their hearts
“if their uncircumcised hearts are humbled…”

c. If they accept their guilt
“And they accept their guilt—”

2. The “Then” part

a. The Lord will remember His covenant
i. With the patriarchs
“Then I will remember My covenant with Jacob, and My covenant with Isaac and My covenant with Abraham I will remember; I will remember the land.”

iii. With the people of Israel
“But for their sake I will remember the covenant of their ancestors, whom I brought out of the land of Egypt in the sight of the nations, that I might be their God:”

b. He will forgive their sins

PERSONAL APPLICATION

1. Let’s try not to sin

2. If we do sin, let’s not end up with despair

3. Let’s confess our sins

b. With accepting our guilt
