"The iniquity of your sister Sodom"

Text: Ezekiel 16:49

THE INIQUITY OF SODOM

The story of Sodom was recorded in the Scriptures for good reason (Genesis 19). The divine judgment of Sodom and Gomorrah was meant to be a lesson for one and all. Sadly, Israel ignored this lesson.

“‘As I live,’ says the Lord God,
‘neither your sister Sodom nor her daughters have done
as you and your daughters have done.
Look, this was the iniquity of your sister Sodom:
She and her daughter had pride, fullness of food, and abundance of idleness;
neither did she strengthen the hand of the poor and needy.
And they were haughty and committed abomination before Me;
therefore I took them away as I saw fit.'”
Ezekiel 16:48-50

1. The word “Sodom”.

a) This was also used to refer to Israel, the Northern kingdom.

b) But in comparison, Sodom-Judah was far worse than Israel.

2. The sins of Sodom-Israel.

a) There was pride.

b) Fullness of food (gluttony).

c) Abundance of idleness.

d) No concern or compassion for the poor and needy.

e) There was haughtiness.

f) They committed abominations.

i) This was a reference to idolatry.

ii) And terrible deeds associated with idolatrous worship in those days.

iii) Violence was prevalent in the land.

3. Divine judgment.

a) This was meted out against the original cities of Sodom and Gomorrah.

b) God had to judge Sodom-Israel too.

c) God took Israel away as He saw fit.

d) Israel was conquered by the Assyrians in 722 BC.

e) The Northern kingdom ceased to exist as a nation.
