The Call Of Wisdom

The personification of wisdom
The author of Proverbs sought to use personification to describe wisdom again. He first used it in Proverbs 1:20. This literary device attributes human characteristics to something inanimate, abstract or non-human. Through personification, wisdom can be made alive to us. It draws our attention, and encourages an appropriate and wise response. Solomon wrote about the voice of wisdom and how she calls out. The challenge is to listen to the voice of wisdom, especially when many voices call out for our attention and may distract us.
The call of wisdom
“Does not wisdom cry out, and understanding lift up her voice?” (Proverbs 8:1)
- Solomon raised the rhetorical question of whether wisdom calls out to all.
- The obvious answer is “Yes!”
- This is because the presence of wisdom is everywhere.
- There is no place where wisdom and understanding cannot be found.
- If we are standing on top of a high hill, wisdom is standing there: “She takes her stand on the top of the high hill, ” (Proverbs 8:2)
- If we are standing where the different pathways meet, wisdom is there also: “Beside the way, where the paths meet. ” (Proverbs 8:2)
- If we are entering a city, wisdom will be there crying out to us: “She cries out by the gates, at the entry of the city, ” (Proverbs 8:3)
- When we enter different doors, wisdom is there to guide us: “At the entrance of the doors:” (Proverbs 8:3)
- It is reassuring to know that wisdom is everywhere for us to listen to.
- Wherever we are, we can draw upon wisdom to lead us.
The need for wisdom
- All of us need wisdom in our lives.
- Wisdom calls out to everyone to listen to her: “To you, O men, I call, and my voice is to the sons of men.” (Proverbs 8:4)
- To those who are simple-minded: “O you simple ones, understand prudence,” (Proverbs 8:5)
- We do not want to remain simple-minded.
- Through wisdom, we can gain prudence to make good decisions in life.
- To those who are foolish: “And you fools, be of an understanding heart.” (Proverbs 8:5)
- Foolishness is not what we want to have.
- Let us recognise our need for wisdom and develop an understanding heart.
The message of wisdom (Proverbs 8:6)
What kind of message does wisdom speak?
1. Wisdom speaks excellent things
- Her message is one of excellence.
- It is something worth listening to.
2. Wisdom also speaks the right things
- There is nothing wrong with the message of wisdom.
- They are the right things for us to listen to and follow.
Let us be challenged to be conscious that wisdom is everywhere. Let us depend on her excellent words to guide us in making good decisions in life and ministry.
