"And not holding fast to the Head..."

Text: Colossians 2:19

A FUNDAMENTAL ERROR

What was a fundamental error in the theological system of the false teachers? They too claimed to be “Christian”. Paul singled out a fundamental flaw.

“And not holding fast to the Head, from whom all the body,
nourished and knit together by joints and ligaments,
grows with the increase that is from God.”
Colossians 2:19

1. “And not holding fast to the Head”

a) If a person declares that he is a Christian, then he must also acknowledge Christ as the Head.
b) If a theological system says that it is Christian, it must similarly acknowledge Christ as the Head.
c) More than that, they must hold fast to the Head, that is Christ!
d) Not acknowledging Christ nor holding fast to Christ as the Head is a fundamental flaw!

2. The Position of Christ

a) He is proclaimed Head of the body, the church (Colossians 1:18).
b) He is the Head of all principality and power (Colossians 2:10).
c) Not holding fast to the Head has serious problems!
i) It denies the Place of Christ.
ii) It replaces Christ.
iii) It substitutes other things in place of Christ.
iv) But nothing can replace the Place of Christ in life or ministry.

REVIEW THE WORK OF CHRIST

It is good from time to time, to review the work of Christ, to establish His Position in our theology and our life. The role and position of Christ Jesus cannot be replaced!

1. He is the image of the invisible God (Colossians 1:15).

2. In Him all things consist (Colossians 1:17).

3. In Him all the fullness of the Godhead is to be found (Colossians 1:19).

4. Through Him all things are reconciled to God (Colossians 1:20-21).

5. He cancelled our debt of sin on the cross (Colossians 2:14).

6. He triumphed over all the principalities and the powers (Colossians 2:15).

7. He is the Head of the body (Colossians 2:19).
