"I say again..."

Text: Galatians 1:9b

A GRIM REMINDER

The problem of perversion of the gospel was to be taken most seriously. Hence the apostle reiterated what he has just declared.

As we have said before, so now I say again,
if anyone preaches any other gospel to you
than what you have received, let him be accursed.

Galatians 1:9

1. “As we have said before”

a) Paul has just written about it.

b) It is very likely that this was something he had spoken of before.

2. “So now I say again”

a) This truth had to be declared.

b) This reiteration was considered necessary.

3. “If anyone preaches any other gospel to you”

a) It does not matter who preaches another gospel.

b) The preacher may be a renowned person.

c) He could have been in the company of Paul and the brethren.

d) There is no “other gospel” that may be preached as from the Lord.

4. “Than what you have received”

a) The content of the gospel must be examined carefully.

b) The gospel preached to the churches of Galatia had been very clear.

c) Many had come to salvation in Christ through the gospel preached by the apostles (Paul and Barnabas and others).

5. “Let him be accursed”

a) Once again the solemn apostolic anathema was pronounced.

b) The significance of the reiteration of this anathema.

i) God Himself will take to task false teachers who pervert the gospel.

ii) The false gospel will only cause disputes rather than godly edification (1 Timothy 1:4).

iii) It will cause shipwreck (1 Timothy 1:19-20).

iv) The solemn pronouncement of an anathema must cause anyone to take heed of this most severe word of admonition.
