Philippians

Day 76

"Stand fast in the Lord, beloved."

Text: Philippians 4:1

JESUS’ TEACHING ON LOVING ONE ANOTHER

It was the Lord Jesus Himself who gave “a new commandment” to His disciples. The command to love one another was repeated more than once.

1. They were to love one another (John 13:34).

2. Love would be the characteristic of His disciples (John 13:35).

3. They were to abide in His love (John 15:9-10).

4. They were to love one another as they were loved by the Lord (John 15:12-13).

FULFILMENT OF THIS COMMANDMENT

The apostle Paul wonderfully fulfilled this commandment of the Lord Jesus. This is clearly seen in the way he related to the Philippians.

“Therefore, my beloved and longed-for brethren,
my joy and crown, so stand fast in the Lord, beloved.”

Philippians 4:1

1. Tender words of endearment were employed

a) “My beloved”
i) The word “beloved” is derived from the word “love” (Greek “agape”).
ii) It is used as an adjective in this text (Greek “agapetos”).
b) “Longed-for”
i) The word “longed-for” is also another adjective (Greek “epipothetos”).
ii) It is used conjointly with the adjective “beloved”.
c) “My brethren”
i) Technically it ought to be translated “brothers”.
ii) Obviously more than “men” were in mind.
iii) The word “brethren” is used generically (reference to both men and women).
Essentially the Church brethren in Philippi.
d) “My joy and crown”
i) These were additional words of affection employed.
ii) The Philippians were dearly loved by the apostle Paul indeed.

2. “Stand fast in the Lord, beloved”

The brethren were urged to stand fast in their faith in the Lord. The context may be found in Philippians 3. They must stand fast against enemies. Paul expressed deep affection for the brethren as they faced their trials and tribulations.
