"His delight is in the law of the LORD..." Psalm 1:2a

Text: Psalm 1

APPRECIATING HEBREW POETRY

The Psalms represent Hebrew poetic style. The form of Hebrew poetry most commonly employed is the use of “parallelism”. We see a classic form of “antithetic parallelism” displayed in Psalm 1. The author used “contrast” to communicate his ideas. The “godly” and the “ungodly” are clearly distinguished by way of sharp contrast!

THE COMPANY OF THE WICKED REJECTED

The person who is truly blessed by the Lord will have sense enough to reject the company of the wicked. The ways of the wicked are rejected outright! He would rather walk alone than to associate with those who are known to be wicked.

THE COMPANY PREFERED

What company would the godly keep then? The following text offers an exciting alternative.

“But his delight is in the law of the LORD,
And in His law, he meditates day and night.”
Psalm 1:2

1. The Company of the Law of the LORD

How does human company compare with “the law of the LORD”? The author discovers two special blessings as he reads the Scriptures.

a) Delight in the law of the Lord

The reading of the Law of the LORD was not a burdensome religious ritual. One may actually find delight in the reading of the Scriptures. In time, he would discover that time spent in the reading of the Lord’s Word brings greater delight than mere human companionship. It is certainly to be preferred than association with wicked companions!

b) Meditation day and night

The reading of the Law can become most “compelling”. The heart, the mind, yes, even the soul may be greatly stirred. It is not enough to merely read the Scriptures for information. The soul desires to “meditate” on God’s Word so that it might feed on it and grow strong. Soon the Law of the Lord is dwelt upon “day and night”. The word of the Lord comes alive to the devoted reader.

2. The Company of the LORD Himself

It is not just good company of literature that the reader discovers. He discovers that as he reads the Scriptures, he finds himself in the company of the LORD Himself. In due time he discovers two precious and glorious truths that confirm the wisdom of his choice to spend time reading the Scriptures with devotion.

a) The law of the LORD reveals the Person of God.
b) The law of the LORD reveals the Plans of God.
