Day 160 – Psalm 21

“Be exalted, O LORD, in Your own strength!” Psalm 21:13a

VICTORY OVER THE ENEMY

David saw his foes as “God’s enemies” (Psalm 21:8a). His greater exultation was really in that the Lord had defeated the forces of evil! Psalm 21:9-12 details some of the battles that God had fought and won. David was only his instrument of war.

1. God’s anger/wrath (Psalm 21:9)

a) God’s anger was directed against the wicked (Psalm 7:11).
b) He would swallow the wicked up.
c) Imagery of a fiery oven was employed to describe how God would destroy the wicked.

2. The offspring of the wicked (Psalm 21:10)

a) The wicked spawned wicked descendants (offspring).
b) They too would be destroyed by God if they chose to walk in the same path of evil.

3. The plans of the wicked (Psalm 21:11)

a) They plotted to do evil.
b) The evil plots planned would be directed against God’s people.
c) God being well aware of their wickedness thwarted their evil plots.

4. God’s action against the wicked (Psalm 21:12)

a) God would make them turn tail.
b) They would have to flee or face God’s arrows directed at their faces.
c) If they proceeded with their evil plans they would face certain death.

GIVING GLORY TO GOD

It was God who gave glory and honour to king David! It was David’s heartfelt desire that the Lord Most High should receive all the glory. Hence he concluded Psalm 21 with these words. If anyone deserved “praise”, it would be none other than the LORD Most High! His strength and His power are to be acknowledged and praised!

“Be exalted, O LORD, in Your own strength!
We will sing and praise Your power.”
Psalm 21:13
