"Their conscience also bearing witness..."

Text: Romans 2:15

THE EXISTENCE OF THE CONSCIENCE

The Scriptures teach that man has a conscience. The following writers of the New Testament wrote about the conscience:-

1. The apostle John

“Then those who heard it, being convicted by their conscience,
went out one by one, beginning with the oldest even to the last.”
John 8:9

2. The apostle Paul

“I tell the truth in Christ, I am not lying, my conscience also bearing me witness in the Holy Spirit.” Romans 9:1

3. The apostle Peter

“For this is commendable, if because of conscience toward God one endures grief, suffering wrongfully.” 1 Peter 2:19

THE TESTIMONY OF THE CONSCIENCE

While we may not be able to precisely locate the exact location of the conscience, we do know that it does exist. One of the functions of the conscience is to bear testimony to our heart.

“Who show the work of the law written in their hearts,
their conscience also bearing witness, and between themselves
their thoughts accusing or else excusing them”
Romans 2:15

1. The law of the heart expressed in works

a) God has done more than giving Israel a formal code of law.
b) He has written this law in the heart of man.
c) The works of man reveal the regard of the individual to these laws.

2. The function of the conscience

a) It functions like “thoughts”.
b) It can do basic things:-
i) It can accuse the individual.
ii) It can excuse the individual.
c) It essentially “bears witness” .
