“A prayer of David” Psalm 17

A SIMPLE SUPERSCRIPTION

A simple superscription is attached to Psalm 17. It is simply called “A prayer of David”. (The Hebrew word for prayer is “tephillah”).

WHAT THE PRAYERS OF DAVID REFLECT

The prayers of David reflect much about him! Prayers may be said to be the windows of the heart.

1. They reveal what David felt.

a) Sadness
b) Gladness

2. They reveal how David struggled with applying his faith in real-time life.

a) His prayers were never ritualistic.
b) The language employed indicate that the words came from the depth of his heart.

3. There is great honesty in the way David uttered his prayers.

a) Earnestness
b) Urgency

4. There is certainly great hope expressed as well.

a) Faith is maintained.
b) There is every reason to believe that God would hear and answer prayers.

5. The prayers of David also give us glimpses of his understanding of God.

a) As a just and impartial Judge
b) As a Sovereign Lord.
c) As a Deliverer
