"I have called upon You"
Day 120 – Psalm 17
“I have called upon You” Psalm 17:6a
DIFFERENT COMPONENTS
The prayer of David (Psalm 17) had a number of components. There are at least three component parts. They may be summarised in the following way:-
1. A plea for vindication Psalm 17:1-4
2. A plea for protection Psalm 17:5-8
3. An imprecatory element Psalm 17:9-14
PLEADING PROTECTION
Vindication from God must be accompanied by Divine protection. This was David’s plea after his petition for vindication.
“I have called upon You, for You will hear me, O God;
Incline Your ear to me, and hear my speech.
Show Your marvelous lovingkindness by Your right hand,
O You who save those who trust in You
From those who rise up against them.
Keep me as the apple of Your eye;
Hide me under the shadow of Your wings.”
Psalm 17:6-8
1. Confidence that God would hear this prayer
a) All prayers must be accompanied by faith.
b) David’s plea was certainly backed up by strong and confident faith (Psalm 17:6).
2. Confidence in the Person of God
a) He is one known for His “marvelous lovingkindness” (Psalm 17:7a).
b) He would never let down those who trust Him (Psalm 17:7b).
3. Confidence in the kind of protection that God would give
a) God would keep His beloved children as “the apple of (His) eye” (Psalm 17:8a)
b) He would protect them “under the shadow of (His) wings”.
David knew God as both Vindicator and Protector! How wonderful it is to have such knowledge of God in a troubled world!
