"We shall be saved from wrath..."

Text: Romans 5:9

JUSTIFIED BY FAITH

Paul argued strongly for the doctrine of justification by faith. He cited a number of things to prove his point:-

1. Citing of the prophetic text found in Habakkuk (“The just shall live by faith” Habakkuk 2:4; Cf. Romans 1:17; 3:28; 5:1)

2. Citing of Abraham as one who was justified by faith (Cf. Romans 4)

JUSTIFIED BY THE BLOOD OF CHRIST

How should we understand the following text, where Paul made mention of another aspect of “justification”?

“Much more then, having now been justified by His blood,
we shall be saved from wrath through Him.”

Romans 5:9

1. Is there an essential difference?

a) Justification by faith?
b) Justification by the blood of Christ?

The answer simply is “No!”

2. What is the point of each phrase?

a) Justification by faith
i) The focus is on the individual exercising faith.
ii) The focus is faith versus works
b) Justification by the blood of Christ
i) The focus is on the work of atonement of Christ.
ii) There is great emphasis on the price Christ paid- “His blood”

SAVED FROM THE WRATH OF GOD

There are many wonderful blessings that emerge from justification. In the above text, Paul highlights a great and glorious truth! We are wonderfully saved from the wrath of God (Cf. Romans 1:18). How comforting it is to know that we need not fear the wrath of God! We have been justified by faith and by the blood of Christ!
