"Raised from the dead by the glory of the Father..."

Text: Romans 6:4

THE DOCTRINE OF THE RESURRECTION

The doctrine of the resurrection has deep theological significance! Paul is but making a brief mention of the significance of resurrection in this text.

“Just as Christ was raised from the dead
by the glory of the Father, even so we also
should walk in newness of life.”
Romans 6:4

1. Christ had to die

a) Christ had to taste death.
b) This was the logical consequence if He were to bear the sins of mankind.
c) Just as sin brings death, so sin brought death to Christ, because He bore the weight of the sin of mankind.

2. Christ had to be buried

a) Sin must be allowed to exert its full authority over Jesus when He donned flesh (Cf. John 1:14)
b) Death must be allowed to do its worst against the crucified Christ; He must remain buried, as proof of death!

3. Christ had to be raised from the dead

a) To demonstrate that His atoning work had been efficacious.
b) To display His victory over sin and Satan.
c) To display the power of God the Father.
d) To display the glory of the Father.
i) In His plan for man’s salvation.
ii) In His power to provide an answer to the problem of sin.
iii) In His grace outpoured to sinful mankind

NEWNESS OF LIFE

Knowing all these great truths, the genuine believer in Christ will want to walk in newness of life that is made possible through our salvation!
