"I speak in human terms..."

Text: Romans 6:19

HUMAN TERMS

The language of divine theology is understandably difficult for God’s thoughts are not our thoughts, and His ways are not our ways! Paul felt that he needed to speak in “human terms” to communicate a very important theological truth.

“I speak in human terms because of the weakness of your flesh.
For just as you presented your members as slaves of uncleanness,
and of lawlessness, so now present your members as slaves of
righteousness for holiness.”
Romans 6:19

IN THE PAST

Paul brought his readers to a time in the past, before they came to believe in the Lord Jesus Christ for salvation. He placed the responsibility of sin on the shoulders of the individual. If a person sinned it was because he presented his members (thoughts, feelings, will) to sin. All too soon sin enslaves him.

1. Uncleanness

Uncleanness is essentially “defilement”. The words of the Lord Jesus Christ shed further light on this subject.

“But those things which proceed out of the mouth come
from the heart, and they defile a man.
For out of the heart proceed evil thoughts, murders, adulteries,
fornications, thefts, false witness, blasphemies.
These are the things which defile a man…”
Matthew 15:18-19

2. Lawlessness

Ultimately, sin is a transgression of God’s laws. The sinner who lives in blatant disregard of sin lives in “lawlessness”.

IN THE PRESENT

Paul urged his readers to do something positive and definite now they had come to faith in the Lord Jesus Christ!

1. A slave of Righteousness

Each individual believer must consciously seek to present his members to become “slaves of righteousness”. One is either a slave of sin or a slave of righteousness. The believer should choose the latter!

2. Pursuit of holiness

Every believer who has understood the horror of being a slave to sin, should desire to walk as far away from the clutches of sin as possible. The best way is surely to pursue holiness! To truly believe in the Lord Jesus is to follow Him. And to follow Jesus would logically lead the individual to pursue holiness as his chosen way of life.
