Day 64 – Psalm 9

“You sat on the throne judging in righteousness.” Psalm 9:4b

THE PROBLEM OF WICKED ENEMIES

David’s reality as king of ancient Israel included the challenge of facing up to wicked enemies. Their presence was ubiquitous! Their sinister intentions and deeds had to be resisted!

HOPE IN GOD AS DIVINE JUDGE

David had to find a supreme reason to hope in if he were not to give in to despair as he fought wickedness in the land. One major hope he clung to with all his heart was the thought of God as the Divine Judge!

“When my enemies turn back,
they shall fall and perish at Your presence.
For You have maintained my right and my cause;
You sat on the throne judging in righteousness.”
Psalm 9:3-4

1. “You sat on the throne judging in righteousness”

a) This represents David’s understanding of God.
b) It is the substance of his hope in God.
c) God is always on the throne of justice.
d) He can be counted upon to judge righteously always.

2. “You have maintained my right and my cause”

a) David speaks of his “right”
i) To desire that justice be upheld.
ii) To bring his problems to God.
b) He also mentioned his “cause”
i) The content of this “cause” may be derived from what he has written about his enemies in previous psalms (Cf. Psalm 3:3; 4:2; 5: 4-6, 9-10; 7:1-2, 12-16)
ii) God will always maintain causes that are righteous!

3. Enemies will perish

David was most confident that the wicked would never ultimately triumph! They will “fall and perish in (God’s) presence!”
