"Who shall bring a charge against God's elect?"

Text: Romans 8:33

EXPECT CRITICS!

Paul well knew that there would be critics of the faith he expounded! The doctrine of salvation by grace through faith was so liberating that critics of this faith must be expected. Let us consider who these “critics” are. Let us name two of them.

1. Opponents of the Faith

a) Those who cannot accept this doctrine of grace.
b) These favoured a concept of “works” and of keeping of the law for salvation.

2. The Devil

a) He is called the Accuser of the brethren (Cf. Revelation 12:10).
b) He would accuse all believers and plague their conscience with memories of sins.
(But these sins have been dealt with by the Lord Jesus when He died on the cross for us)!

ANSWERING OUR CRITICS

How may we effectively give an answer to our critics? Let us ponder the following text!

“Who shall bring a charge against God’s elect?
It is God who justifies.
Who is he who condemns?
It is Christ who died, and furthermore is also risen,
who is even at the right hand of God,
who also makes intercession for us!”
Romans 8:33-34

1. Point out the fact that it is God who justifies us.

We are not able to justify ourselves at all!

2. Point out the significance of the death of Christ!

a) He died for our sins
b) He died that our sins and all its guilt/penalty may be taken away!

3. Point out that Christ is our Intercessor

a) He is at the right hand of God… symbolizing His power
b) He is our High Priest; He intercedes for us most powerfully
