"The purpose of God according to election..."

Text: Romans 9:11

A STRAIGHTFORWARD PLAN MADE COMPLEX

God’s plan could have been lots simpler if man had not complicated it. If Abraham had only held fast to God’s promise, and had not listened to Sarah’s suggestion, the original plan of God would have been straightforward and simple. However, because of human failings, God’s straightforward plan became more complex.

IN GOD’S MIND

Paul maintained, that in God’s mind, His original plan would be kept! Even if there are further complications, His plan to bless according to His divine purpose, would still be upheld. The following text makes this strong argument.

“And not only this, but when Rebecca also had conceived
by one man, even by our father Isaac (for the children not yet
being born, nor having done any good or evil, that the purpose
of God according to election might stand, not of works but of Him
who calls)”
Romans 9:10-11

1. A further complication arose

a) Twins were born to Rebecca, Isaac’s wife.
b) Which one would carry the line of Isaac?

2. Introduction of a deep and profound theological truth

a) God has His own divine and eternal purpose.
i) This is not fully fathomable by man.
ii) This can only be understood by decretive revelation.
b) Another profound principle- Election
i) God has the prerogative to choose.
ii) The basis of His choice is known only to Himself.
iii) The basis of His choice was NOT dependent upon the actions of Esau or Jacob.
c) A third profound principle is introduced- Calling

Those whom God has purposed within Himself to elect, He will also call effectively. These principles ensured that God’s original plan was carried out perfectly.
