"As He says also in Hosea"

Text: Romans 9:25

ONE SCRIPTURE PORTION AFTER ANOTHER

Paul was very wise to cite Scripture as he expounded the doctrine of Sovereignty of God and His will. The Holy Writ was his sole source of authority! He needed no other!

“As He says also in Hosea:
‘I will call them My people, who were not My people,
And her beloved, who was not beloved.’

And it shall come to pass in the place where it was said
to them, ‘You are not My people,’
There they shall be called the sons of the living God.”
Romans 9:25-26

1. Understanding the context of the quotation

a) Hosea was a prophet who ministered to ancient Israel.
b) The nation was so full of sin, that God cried out to them that they were “Not My people” (Cf. Hosea 1:9)

2. The hope held out to Israel

a) Hope was offered to erring, sinful Israel.
b) One day, they would be “sons of the living God” (Cf. Hosea 1:10).

3. On what basis did God make these decisions?

The citation of Hosea is poignant and very significant!

a) Israel’s spiritual state and standing
i) The nation has become grossly idolatrous.
ii) It had also become wickedly oppressive.
iii) There was nothing in Israel that merited Divine blessing.
b) God’s sovereignty
i) His grace and mercy are all that Israel needed.
ii) His sovereign will must be gracious understood and appropriated.

Man must humbly bow his heart in adoration of God’s great mercy!
