"Isaiah also cries out concerning Israel."

Text: Romans 9:27

ANOTHER PROMINENT PROPHET CITED

Paul felt that it was important to cite another prophet to support his doctrine of the sovereignty of God’s will. This time he turned to the writings of the prophet Isaiah.

“Isaiah also cries out concerning Israel:
‘Though the number of the children of Israel be
As the sand of the sea, the remnant will be saved.
For He will finish the work and cut it short in righteousness,
Because the LORD will make a short work upon the earth.’

And as Isaiah said before:
‘Unless the LORD of Sabaoth had left us a seed,
We would have become like Sodom,
And we would have been made like Gomorrah.'”
Romans 9:27-29

1. The Context of the Ministry of Isaiah

a) He was called to be a prophet (Cf. Isaiah 6).
b) His message was manifold:-
i) To condemn the many sins of the nation of Israel.
ii) To call the nation to repentance.
iii) To comfort the people through a message of hope.
iv) To challenge people to consider the salvation plan of God through the Messiah (Cf. Isaiah 52-53)

2. LORD of Sabaoth

This title may be translated “LORD of Hosts”. It is a reference to the great majesty of God! This lofty title highlights even more the sovereignty of God!

3. The Sovereign will of God in action in the history of Israel

a) A remnant will be saved!
b) Israel was ignobly compared to Sodom and Gomorrah. It was doomed for destruction had it not been for the sovereign will of God.
c) God exercised great mercy in His sovereign will towards sinful Israel.
