"Greet Priscilla and Aquila..."

Text: Romans 16:3

RELEVANT BACKGROUND INFORMATION

Paul’s friendship with Priscilla and Aquila was recorded in the Scriptures (Acts 18). The following information may be garnered from Acts 18.

1. Aquila and Priscilla had been expelled from Rome.

2. They became acquainted with Paul in Corinth.

3. They worked together as tent makers for a while.

4. They proved themselves to be good teachers of the word of God. They mentored Apollos and helped groom him to serve the Lord well.

COMMENDATION OF TWO OUTSTANDING SERVANTS

Paul wrote glowingly of Priscilla and Aquila in the following text.

“Greet Priscilla and Aquila, my fellow workers
in Christ Jesus, who risked their own necks for my life,
to whom not only I give thanks, but also all the churches
of the Gentiles. Likewise greet the church that is in their house.”
Romans 16:3-5

1. Fellow workers in Christ Jesus

These words are not easily stated! These two friends must have proven themselves indeed, to be called “fellow workers”.

2. Who risked their own necks for my life

When this incident took place is not recorded in the Scriptures! However this incident stood out to Paul so much he felt that he must mention this fact.

a) It takes a great friendship to risk one’s life for a friend.
b) It was only right that Paul honoured their hand of friendship extended to him.

3. All the churches of the Gentiles

a) The brave act of Pricilla and Aquila must have been known to many.
b) These Gentile churches were glad that Paul’s life was not terminated prematurely (all thanks to Priscilla and Aquila).

Paul’s gratitude for such great friends was to commend them publicly! He teaches us a great lesson on how to appreciate special friends!
