"In proportion to our faith..."

Text: Romans 12:6

THE DOCTRINE OF SPIRITUAL GIFTS

The apostle wrote on the subject of “spiritual gifts” in a number of his epistles. It is vital to have a good grasp of what he has written (overall) before attempting to interpret a specific text (e.g. Romans 12:6-9).

1. The Purpose of Gifts (Cf. Ephesians 4:11-12)

a) Gifts were essentially people sent by God.
b) The purpose of these “Gifts” was obvious- to edify the Church.

2. Some Problems with Gifts (Cf. 1 Corinthians 12-14)

a) The gift of “tongues” became a major problem in Corinth.
b) There was abuse of this gift, necessitating in Paul writing very strongly against the abuse of this gift.
c) The gift of Love was extolled above all spiritual gifts (Cf. 1 Corinthians 13)

3. Practical encouragement (advice) concerning the utility of Gifts (Romans 12:6-9)

a) There were no obvious problems with the utility of spiritual gifts.
b) Paul sought to encourage the Roman brethren to employ their spiritual gifts effectively.

UNDERSTANDING THE GIFT OF PROPHECY

Let us take time to consider this particular notation about the gift of prophecy in the following text.

“If prophecy, let us prophesy in proportion to our faith.”
Romans 12:6b

1. The gift of prophecy was valid and relevant in the first century.

2. The special place of prophecy was placed with “apostleship”. “Apostles and prophets” were honoured as being “foundations” of the Church (Ephesians 2:20)

3. Once the foundation has already been laid (the first century) it stands to reason that the gift of prophecy for today is no longer in existence!

4. Paul’s admonition to utilize this gift (Romans 12:6b) must be read within this context!
