Text: Exodus 8 : 1-5

REPEATED MESSAGE

Again and again, Moses was sent to Pharaoh with the same message.

“Thus says the LORD:
‘Let My people go, that they may serve Me.'”
EXODUS 8:1

The first message was rebuffed. Worse than that, Pharaoh punished the children of Israel with impossible demands (Cf. Exodus 5). The second message was sent with a plague – all water supplies had turned to blood (Exodus 7). Pharaoh’s response was simply to walk away from Moses! He did not dare to add to the sorrows of the children of Israel this time round!

ADVANCED WARNING OF A SECOND PLAGUE – FROGS!

Would Pharaoh not listen? Not even after the first plague? What if there was another plague? Surely there could not be another plague as devastating and humiliating as the first one, could there? Then came another word of warning.

“But if you refuse to let them go, behold,
I will smite all your territory with frogs.
So the river shall bring forth frogs abundantly,
which shall go up and come into your house,
into your bedroom, on your bed, into the houses
of your servants, on your people, into your ovens,
and into your kneading bowls. And the frogs shall
come up on you, on your people, and on all your servants.”
EXODUS 8:2-4

If this warning had come from anybody else, it would be a bad joke. Frogs in the river are a common sight. Frogs in the houses? Frogs on people – even on the Pharaoh? That would be far-fetched, wouldn’t it? Pharaoh was not supposed to take this warning seriously, was he?

EXECUTION OF THE WORD OF WARNING

God knew the heart of Pharaoh all too well. He would not take this word of warning seriously. There was only one thing to do. This word must be executed!

“Then the LORD spoke to Moses, ‘Say to Aaron,
‘Stretch out your hand with your rod over the streams,
over the rivers, and over the ponds, and cause frogs
to come up on the land of Egypt.'”
EXODUS 8:5

Immediately, a huge, innumerable army of “frogs came up and covered the land of Egypt” (Exodus 8:6). The magicians, out to convince Pharaoh of their powers also managed to conjure up frogs (Exodus 8:7). But why would they want more frogs?
