THE RIGHT SPIRIT

One of the most significant characteristics of Moses’ spirit in ministry was his great sensitivity to the Lord. The most oft-repeated phrase in Exodus 40 is:

“As the LORD commanded Moses”

Exodus 40:16, 19, 21, 23, 25, 27, 29, 32

Why was this phrase repeated so many times over? This phrase is not a futile and bland description of unthinking, slavish obedience. Moses was not automaton! He had a wonderful relationship with the Lord. This phrase highlights a beautiful working relationship with God.

1. With reference to the Lord

It is very likely that the Lord was talking to Moses all the time he was setting up the Tabernacle. What a marvelous thing to experience!

a) The Lord’s Presence with Moses
The Lord must have been with Moses, as he set up the Tabernacle. This should not be surprising to us. The Lord’s Presence was with Moses when he ministered in Egypt. God spoke to him, and guided him each time he went to speak to the Pharaoh. The Lord was there with him as he led the children of Israel through the wilderness.
b) The Lord’s Communion with Moses
The Lord must have been speaking to Moses even as he went about putting the various articles in the Tabernacle. The Lord’s relationship with Moses was the closest ever! He spoke to him “face to face”.

2. With reference to Moses

Setting up the Tabernacle was a new experience for Moses. How would he have attempted to set the Tabernacle up?

a) Seeking advice from the Lord
Since there was this special sense of close communion with the Lord, it would be natural to turn to Him for constant advice. Moses dearly loved to please the Lord. He would have wanted to do everything exactly as the Lord would have wanted it.
b) Seeking approval from the Lord
How Moses’ heart must have been uplifted when he knew that the Lord approved of all that he did. The Lord would have indicated that He truly approved of all that Moses did. He would have signaled to Moses again and again that he had indeed obeyed all that was commanded of him.
