Text: Exodus 40 : 17-19

THE ERECTION OF THE TABERNACLE

All instructions had been received. Work began in earnest. Moses was personally involved in the erection of the Tabernacle. We would expect him to be personally and directly involved.

“And it came to pass in the first month of the second year,
on the first day of the month, that the tabernacle was raised up.”
EXODUS 40:17

This text is important for a number of reasons. Let us consider two special details:-

1. One Year after the Exodus from Egypt

It had been one year after the children of Israel had made a mass exodus from Egypt!

2. Tabernacle worship

This represented a tremendous leap forward from:-

a) Ad hoc worship
b) Personal worship
c) Family worship

These were not wrong or bad in themselves, but they did not have the same kind of significance as Tabernacle worship. The Tabernacle would now play a central role to unite all Israel together as a nation, and as a people of God.

LOVINGLY ERECTED

We can imagine how Moses attended to each detail, as he personally supervised the erection of the Tabernacle. (The use of Moses’ name and the use of the third personal pronoun singular, informs us that this great servant of God took a personal interest in the supervision of the Tabernacle project).

“So Moses raised up the tabernacle, fastened its sockets,
set up its boards, put in its bars, and raised up its pillars.
And he spread out the tent over the tabernacle and put the
covering of the tent on top of it, as the LORD had
commanded Moses.”
EXODUS 40:18-19

A whole year had passed! What an eventful, life-changing year it had been. From a diffident and fearful man, Moses had progressed to become a mighty servant of God. It was right that the man who received the plans for the Tabernacle should be so personally involved in setting it up. And as Moses went about tightening each socket, he was most conscious of the God’s Presence and His commandments.
