"And now, Israel, what does the LORD your God require of you, but to fear the LORD your God, to walk in all His ways and to love Him, to serve the LORD your God with all your heart and with all your soul." Deuteronomy 10:12

Text: Exodus 34 : 18-25

GREAT WAYS TO ENSURE A CLOSE RELATIONSHIP WITH GOD

How may Israel make sure that its relationship with God is kept secure and intact over the years? God made provision for Israel through its religious calendar. The following feasts were to be kept faithfully (Cf. Exodus 23).

1. The Feast of the Passover Exodus 34:25

2. The Feast of Unleavened Bread Exodus 34:18

3. The Feast of Weeks, of the firstfruits of wheat harvest Exodus 34:22

4. The Feast of Ingathering Exodus 34:22

5. Three special efforts to be made (to go to Jerusalem) Exodus 34:23

6. The weekly Sabbath Exodus 34:21

All these religious feasts were already explained to the nation (Cf. Exodus 13, 23). On this occasion, God was just highlighting the ways in which Israel could ensure the Lord’s blessings on the nation. Their part was to keep these religious feasts that were full of rich symbolic significance.

OTHER REMINDERS

Besides these Feast Days, God also wanted Israel to have other reminders. Two may be highlighted:-

1. The Law of the Firstborn Exodus 34:19-20

This law declares that all first-born male belonged to the Lord (Cf. Exodus 13:2ff).

2. No leaven to be offered Exodus 34:25

Unleavened bread highlights the need to be “holy” before the Lord (Cf. Exodus 12:10).

There were no elaborate explanations given on this occasion. There was no need to do that because God had already spoken at length to Moses concerning these things.

SHOULD THERE BE FULL OBEDIENCE

Graciously, the Lord gave another word of assurance that He would bless them if they were to keep His commandments. He would provide for them and protect them.

“For I will cast out the nations before you and enlarge
your borders; neither will any man covet your land…”
