Exodus
"Thus I prostrated myself before the LORD; forty days and forty nights I kept prostrating myself, because the LORD had said He would destroy you." Deuteronomy 9:25
Text: Exodus 34 : 10-12
RENEWING OF THE COVENANT
God had heard Moses’ prayer! The clearest indication of this was the fact that God began to speak of the “covenant”. Moreover, He spoke of Israel entering the Promised Land! The language God used was one that was full of hope for the nation.
“And He said, ‘Behold, I make a covenant.
Before all your people I will do marvels such as
have not been done in all the earth, nor in any nation;
and all the people among whom you are shall see the work
of the LORD. For it is an awesome thing that I will do with you.'”
EXODUS 34:10
1. “Behold, I make a covenant”
These were the words that Moses longed to hear! Till God had made this declaration, Moses would remain prostrated before Him in ceaseless prayer!
2. “I will do marvels”
Israel had no idea what it would take to march through the wilderness en route to Canaan! They did not have a clue as to what would be involved to conquer the land of Canaan! It would require God’s involvement! God would have to show them marvelous miracles such as “had not been done in all the earth, nor in any nation”! What a wondrous promise God gave to Moses and to Israel!
3. “And all the people…shall see the work of the LORD”
The work of settling Israel in a foreign land was no small task! Indeed, it may be described as “an awesome thing” that God would do for the sake of His inheritance!
SOLEMN WORDS OF WARNING
God was willing to pardon the sins of Israel! He would forbear and pass over the iniquity of the nation! Nevertheless, they must give even more serious heed to the dangers that still lie ahead of them.
“Observe what I command you this day. Behold, I am driving out
from before you the Amorite and the Canaanite and the Hittite
and the Perizzite and the Hivite and the Jebusite.
Take heed to yourself, lest you make a covenant with the
Inhabitants of the land where you are going, lest it be a snare
in your midst.”
EXODUS 34:11-12
“Observe what I command you this day… Take heed to yourself”- These words had to be stated in the most emphatic way possible! Even if God were to work mightily in the midst of the nation, Israel still had to make very sure that they must never ever enter into a covenant with idolatrous inhabitants of the land of Canaan!
