Exodus
"We will not hide them from their children, telling to the generation to come the praises of the LORD, and His strength and His wonderful works that He has done." Psalm 78:4
Text: Exodus 12 : 26-27, 29
POSTERITY IN MIND
The ordinance of keeping the Lord’s Passover was meant to be passed on to the next generation! This was well anticipated! Children will ask good questions, out of natural curiosity!
“And it shall be, when your children say to you,
‘What do you mean by this service?’ that you shall say,
‘It is the Passover sacrifice of the LORD, who passed over
the houses of the children of Israel in Egypt when He struck
the Egyptians and delivered our households.'”
EXODUS 12:26-27
The Passover was meant to be a single event, never to be repeated! The significance of the event can and must be passed down from one generation to another!
1. From parents to children
The most natural setting for children to learn is in the home environment! Over a meal, in the intimate comfort of a family, children can learn so much when their parents take time to speak about the Lord!
2. With faith and awe
The faith of the children of Israel was well anchored in history! The event of the Passover was so huge in significance that both faith and awe must be retained as the meaning of the Feast is explained to the next generation to come!
THE EXECUTION OF THE FINAL PLAGUE
With bated breath the children of Israel awaited the day when the LORD would pass over the land of Egypt. The detailed instructions had been carefully carried out. The sacrificial lamb had been selected. After four days it was slain, and its blood smeared on the doorposts and lintel. No one ventured out the house that night. All the children of Israel were fully dressed, ready to leave Egypt at a moment’s notice.
“And it came to pass at midnight that the LORD struck
all the firstborn in the land of Egypt, from the firstborn
of Pharaoh who sat on his throne to the firstborn of the captive
who was in the dungeon, and all the firstborn of the livestock.”
EXODUS 12:29
What a sobering experience that must have been! The magicians of Pharaoh were right when they said, “This is the finger of God” (Exodus 8:19)! Never had Pharaoh felt more impotent! Who was he really dealing with? How could he deny the power of the God of the Hebrews! Every single word that He had uttered had been fulfilled to the letter! Plague after plague had caused great devastation to the land of Egypt! And now this – the death of all the firstborn in Egypt! It was enough! This war must cease!
