Day 115 – Mark 5

THE REQUEST OF THE GADARENES

The Gadarenes had made up their minds. As politely as they could, they made their request known to Jesus.

“Then they began to plead with Him to
depart from their region.”
MARK 5:17

What were some of the possible factors that led them to come to this conclusion? Let us consider two main factors:-

1. The Fear factor

a) They feared the Person who wielded so much power over demons.

b) They feared what they did not understand.

c) They could not reconcile many things in their minds.

This was especially so, with reference to the one who was known to be demon-possessed.

2. The Loss factor

a) There was the loss of a herd of 2000 pigs.

b) There would be a loss of income and employment for some.

THE REQUEST OF THE FORMER MADMAN OF GADARA

Jesus would, of course, respect the request of the Gadarenes. He would never intrude where He is not wanted!

“And when He got into the boat, he who had
been demon-possessed begged Him that he
might be with Him.”
MARK 5:18

When Jesus prepared to leave Gadara, the man who had just been marvelously healed begged to be with Him, as one of His disciples. His reasons are obvious! Four may be highlighted:-

1. A natural affinity to the One who had delivered him from the power of demons.

2. A reasonable request to follow Jesus that he might learn more about Him.

3. A possible fear that he might never be able to fully integrate back at Gadara.

4. A natural desire to make his new life count for the Lord who saved him.
