Text: Mark 1

"Though it is tested by fire, may be found to praise, honour and glory at the revelation of Jesus Christ." 1 Peter 1:7b

THE MINISTRY OF THE HOLY SPIRIT IN THE LIFE OF JESUS

Mark not only noted the fact that the Spirit of God descended on Jesus but he also went on to describe that from that moment on, He took control.

“Immediately the Spirit drove Him
into the wilderness.”
MARK 1:12

It would be helpful if we were to take note of the involvement and ministry of the Holy Spirit in the life of Jesus.

1. The Conceiving of Jesus in the womb of the virgin Mary (Cf. Matthew 1:20)

a) It would take nothing less the mighty power of the Spirit of God to effect this.
b) This had to be done so as to ensure that Jesus would be born without inheriting the guilt and the sinful nature that came to everyone born in the natural manner.

2. The Involvement of the Holy Spirit in the life of Mary, the mother of Jesus

a) This is to sanctify Mary as she was the one chosen to give birth to Jesus.
b) The power of the Holy Spirit would overshadow Mary from conception to delivery.

THE USE OF POWERFUL LANGUAGE

Mark used a very powerful and graphic verb to describe the way in which the Spirit of God related to Jesus. That special word is “drove”.

1. The lexical idea

a) The word “drove” is “ekballo” (a compound word)
b) If translated in a very literal manner

You could describe Jesus as being “propelled” or “thrust”.

2. Application of the Lexical idea to the Biblical text

a) The Spirit of God was the driving force in the life of Jesus
b) He would now:-
i) Take the lead.
ii) He would now take full charge of the physical and human aspect of Jesus’ life.
