Exodus
"Therefore know that that the LORD your God, He is God, the faithful God who keeps covenant and mercy for a thousand generations with those who love Him and keep His commandments." Deuteronomy 7:9
Text: Exodus 30 : 22-33
THE MAKING OF HOLY ANOINTING OIL
Consecration almost always involved the use of a special anointing oil. The ingredients were carefully specified. A skilled apothecary would be needed to mix these ingredients together to form the anointing oil.
“Moreover the LORD spoke to Moses, saying,
‘Also take for yourself quality spices-
five hundred shekels of liquid myrrh,
half as much sweet-smelling cinnamon
(two hundred and fifty shekels), two hundred and fifty shekels
of sweet-smelling cane, five hundred shekels of cassia, according
to the shekel of the sanctuary, and a hin of olive oil.
And you shall make from these a holy anointing oil, an ointment
compounded according to the art of the perfumer. It shall be a
holy anointing oil.'”
EXODUS 30:22-25
THE USES OF THE HOLY ANOINTING OIL
The holy anointing oil was to be used for very specific people and purposes.
“With it you shall anoint the tabernacle of meeting
and the ark of the Testimony; the table and all its utensils,
the lampstand and its utensils, and the altar of incense;
the altar of burnt offering with all its utensils, and the laver
and its base. You shall consecrate them, that they may be
most holy; whatever touches them must be holy. And you shall
anoint Aaron and his sons, and consecrate them, that they may
minister to Me as priests.”
EXODUS 30:26-30
All associated with the Tabernacle ministry were to have an anointing of this holy oil!
PROHIBITIONS TO BE NOTED
There were also clear prohibitions concerning the use of the anointing oil.
“And you shall speak to the children of Israel, saying:
‘This shall be a holy anointing oil to Me throughout your
generations. It shall not be poured on man’s flesh; nor shall
you make any other like it, according to its composition. It is holy,
and it shall be holy to you. Whoever compounds any like it,
or whoever puts any of it on an outsider, shall be cut off from
his people.'”
EXODUS 30:31-33
That which has been declared holy cannot be used for profane or mundane uses!
