Text: Exodus 25 : 1-2

FORTY DAYS IN CLOSE COMMUNION WITH GOD

Once again, Moses ascended Mount Sinai to receive further instruction from the Lord. He had already learned so much from the Lord! All that he had been taught had been carefully written down as “The Book of the Covenant”. He looked forward to learning more wonderful lessons from the Lord! What would he learn this time round?

PATRIARCHAL WORSHIP

The kind of worship that Moses gave reflected what the patriarchs of old offered. Was that acceptable to the Lord? Yes, of course. But whereas that form of worship was suitable in the days of the patriarchs, the time had come when a new worship form must be considered.

A NATIONAL RELIGION

When Jacob led his family down to live with Joseph, there were only seventy people (Cf. Genesis 46:27)! The family had become a nation! It was now time for Israel to understand what it means to have “a national religion”.

DIVINE INSTRUCTION CONCERNING WORSHIP

At the heart of a religion is “worship”. How does God want His people to worship Him? He would have to inform Israel as to how worship may be offered. All too often, worship is taken for granted! The Lord did not want Israel to take worship for granted, and thus careful instruction had to be given! Moses was the one chosen to learn about the doctrine of worship! In turn, he would descend from the mountain to instruct the children of Israel!

“Then the LORD spoke to Moses, saying,
‘Speak to the children of Israel, that they bring Me
an offering. From everyone who gives it willingly with
his heart you shall take My offering.”
EXODUS 25:1-2

1. The First Topic – Bringing of An Offering

It is not without significance that God addressed the matter of bringing “an offering” to Him!

2. God calls it “My offering”

God did not mince words when He described the gifts that He expected Israel to bring when the nation comes before Him. He called it “My offering”.

3. All offerings must be given “willingly”

Could God make such a demand? Could He also insist that everyone must prepare to present all offerings “willingly with his heart”? The answer is decidedly “Yes!” Does God have to “feel bad” about bringing up the subject of an “offering”?
