Text: Exodus 24 : 7

WORSHIP WAS MEANT TO INVOLVE ALL

Moses led in worship. Young men were invited to help build the altar and to slay the oxen to be presented to the Lord as a burnt offering and a peace offering. The word of God was read to all present! There was a high level of participation or involvement from all!

WORSHIP WAS MEANT TO BE INTERACTIVE

The worship Moses innovated was highly interactive. As he read the Book of the Covenant, the worshippers responded most appropriately.

“Then he took the Book of the Covenant and read
in the hearing of the people. And they said,
‘All that the Lord has said we will do, and be obedient.'”
EXODUS 24:7

1. “And they said…”

These words represented at least two things:-

a) Immediate and spontaneous response from the worshippers

This must have been a heart-warming response to observe! Spontaneous response from the heart is always deeply moving.

b) A united response from the people

This response was significant. It was not a response from an individual or two. This was a response from a whole congregation!

2. “All that the Lord has said…”

This is a significant statement. It meant that the worshippers fully understood and appreciated that the Book of the Covenant, well represented the voice of the Lord! It may only have been Moses reading from the Book of the Covenant, but the authoritative voice of the Lord was recognized!

3. “We will do and be obedient”

The children of Israel recognized not only the authority behind the Book of the Covenant! They also understood that an appropriate response must include practical obedience!

Mere comprehension would not be an adequate response. Even appreciation of the Word of God would not be a sufficient response! Appropriate response must include a promise to put into action all that God had commanded!

The children of Israel had on an earlier occasion pleaded with Moses to represent them before the Lord. They promised that they would heed his voice as one who was God’s spokesman. They were now reaffirming that word (Cf. Exodus 20:19)!
