"You are My witnesses', says the LORD, 'And My servant whom I have chosen, that you may know and believe Me, and understand that I am He. Before Me there was no God formed, nor shall there be after Me." Isaiah 43:10

Text: Exodus 15 : 18-21

THE OCCASION FOR “THE SONG OF MOSES”

The occasion that inspired Moses to write a song to praise God may be found in this text.

“For the horses of Pharaoh went with his chariots
and his horsemen into the sea, and the LORD brought back
the waters of the sea upon them. But the children of Israel
went on dry land in the midst of the sea.”
EXODUS 15:19

This historical event moved Moses so deeply that he composed a special song to commemorate this event! The nature of this song was highly reflective and theological!

THE CONCLUSION OF “THE SONG OF MOSES”

This may be found in the following text. It offers yet another glimpse of how Moses viewed God.

“The LORD shall reign forever and ever.”
EXODUS 15:18

Moses understood the reign of God in at least two ways!

1. God reigned over Israel

It was as the Sovereign Lord or King God fought on behalf of Israel. As King of Israel, He championed their cause!

2. God reigned over Egypt

God’s power was far-reaching! He was also sovereign over Egypt! Indeed, He was God Most High, Possessor of heaven and earth (Cf. Genesis 14:19-20)!

THE JOY OF THE WOMEN-FOLK

The joy that came with the victory over the Egyptians was shared by all! The women-folk, led by Miriam took up a short chorus, in response to “The Song of Moses.”

“Then Miriam the prophetess, the sister of Aaron,
took the timbrel in her hand; and all the women went out after her
with timbrels and with dances. And Miriam answered them,
‘Sing to the LORD,
For He has triumphed gloriously!
The horse and its rider
He has thrown into the sea.'”
EXODUS 15:20-21

The spirit of joy that flooded the entire camp of the children of Moses was near fever-pitch. The sense of awe at the feat that God had wrought was virtually overwhelming! Hebrew cultural dances reached new heights that day!
