"Then she (Hagar) called the name of the Lord ("The Angel of the Lord") who spoke to her, 'You-Are-The-God-Who-Sees." Genesis 16:13

Text: Exodus 3 : 1-3

ALL READY TO SEND A DELIVERER FOR ISRAEL

God had heard the cries of the children of Israel. It was now time for Him to respond to the prayers that had been ascending to Him, accompanied by pitiful moans. The man He had chosen to be the deliverer was now ready to be sent.

“Now Moses was tending the flock of Jethro
his father-in-law, the priest of Midian.
And he led the flock to the back of the desert,
and came to Horeb, the mountain of God.”
EXODUS 3:1

Moses was out tending his father-in-law’s flock. It was routine for him to bring the flock to green pastures. On this occasion he found himself at Mount Horeb! Little did he know that his life’s destiny would change forever from that day onwards.

A DIVINE MANIFESTATION FROM THE ANGEL OF THE LORD

To especially attract Moses’ attention, a divine manifestation appeared to him.

“And the Angel of the Lord appeared to him in a flame of fire
from the midst of a bush. So he looked, and behold,
the bush was burning with fire, but the bush was not consumed.”
EX0DUS 3:2

We are familiar with the Angel of the Lord. He appeared as “The-God-Who-Sees” to Hagar when she fled from Sarah’s fierce wrath. He also appeared to Jacob and ministered to him when he was in Padan Aram (Cf. Genesis 31:11). This same Angel of the Lord now appeared to Moses. The mention of the Angel provides a definite sense of continuity with the Book of Genesis.

GREATLY INTRIGUED

Moses had wandered all over the land of Midian. He traversed the land far and wide. He was not afraid of being alone with his sheep. But though he had looked after Jethro’s flocks for years, he had never seen such a sight before! How could a bush be burning and yet appear untouched by the fire! This was certainly no trick of light from the evening sun!

“Then Moses said, ‘I will now turn aside and see
this great sight, why the bush does not burn.'”
EXODUS 3:3

Certainly, Moses was not a fearful or superstitious person. He had shown great courage when he was much younger in Egypt. He had remained the same brave man when he took his flock to graze wherever he could find pasture. He was not afraid of the dark and lonely nights when it was too late to return home. He was not afraid of the puzzling sight that caught his attention. Being who he was, he felt he must investigate the wondrous sight that defied all human logic and reasoning.
