Exodus

Exodus
Day
Day 16

"The fear of the Lord is the instruction of wisdom, And before honour is humility." Proverbs 15:33

Text: Exodus 3 : 4-6

THE FIRST WORD FROM GOD

Moses probably wasn’t thinking that the burning bush was from God! He must have been more than a little startled to hear Someone calling out his name.

“So when the Lord saw that he turned aside to look,
God called to him from the midst of the bush and said,
‘Moses, Moses!’ And he said, ‘Here I am.'”
EXODUS 3:4

How was he to interpret this Voice that had so clearly called out his name? Who was there in this wilderness? Swiftly, he replied, as he normally would, when someone greeted him. Who was this Person?

THE FIRST LESSON

Immediately, after God called Moses, He gave him the very first lesson.

“Then He said, ‘Do not draw near this place.
Take your sandals off your feet, for the place where
you stand is holy ground.’
Moreover He said, ‘I am the God of your father –
the God of Abraham, the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob.’
And Moses hid his face, for he was afraid to look upon God.”
EXODUS 3:5-6

The very first lesson that Moses had to learn was how to have the fear of the Lord in his heart. Did Moses learn this lesson well? Yes! We read that “he hid his face”. No more was he curious about the burning bush! He was standing before the very presence of God Himself! His heart must have trembled greatly. He was right to be “afraid to look upon God”.

ESTABLISHING OTHER IMPORTANT LESSONS

Moses learned many lessons that day. Two special ones may be highlighted:-

1. A Holy God!

Moses learned much about God that day! He was HOLY! Where He stood and revealed Himself, that ground was sanctified! But of course he must take off his shoes before this great and holy God. The removal of his shoes was the most basic expression of his reverence of this Holy God.

2. The God of his Forefathers

All the Hebrews grew up with stories of their patriarchs. Stories of how God graciously gave a special Covenant to Abraham were told to the Hebrew children the moment they understood their native tongue! Moses was blessed and privileged indeed. God had revealed Himself to Moses as He did to Abraham, Isaac and Jacob!
