MORE ABOUT THE NAME OF GOD

Did Moses want more knowledge concerning the name of God? The Lord was willing to oblige!

“Moreover God said to Moses,
‘Thus you shall say to the children of Israel:
‘The Lord God of your fathers, the God of Abraham,
the God of Isaac and the God of Jacob has sent me to you.
This is My name forever, and this is My memorial
to all generations.'”
EXODUS 3:15

“The Lord God of your fathers…”

If the name, “I AM WHO I AM” was difficult to expound, then perhaps, this particular title would be easier to comprehend. He was indeed the “Lord God” of their forefathers, was He not?

God revealed Himself to Abraham and then went on to give him a special covenant. He also revealed Himself similarly to Isaac and to Jacob. The title “The God of Abraham, the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob” became a specially meaningful and historic appellation.

“This is My name forever…”

Does Israel need a more personal name to identify God? The Lord certainly didn’t think so! He graciously allowed His holy name to be associated with Abraham, Isaac and Jacob for a number of good reasons. This revealed name of God would be more than sufficient for the needs of the children of Israel thenâ?¦ and forever!

“This is My memorial to all generations…”

The name of God when invoked should do a number of things for the individual or the community, for that matter. It should stir up and inspire great faith in the Lord!

1. History

The history of Israel may be much briefer than some other nations, but no one could boast of a God who involved Himself in national affairs!

2. Faithful Continuity

One of the things that marked God’s relationship with Israel is surely His faithfulness! He was absolutely faithful to the Covenant He gave to Abraham! He had blessed as He had promised!

3. A Memorial Name

How should Israel address this God? They may call Him, “The God of Abraham” and He will respond! This was His “memorial name” to all generations.
