GETTING AWAY WITH IT

The Pharisees never felt more helpless! Once again Jesus seemed to have gotten away scot-free! They must have seethed at their impotence! Would they never be able to get the better of Jesus?

STRANGE BEDFELLOWS

The scribes were “the first” to have had a public clash with Jesus (Cf. Mark 2:6). Soon they joined hands with the Pharisees to do battle with Jesus (Cf. Mark 2:16). Perhaps they felt that they could do better if they were to battle together. They were wrong!

If the scribes and Pharisees were to join forces together, few would raise eyebrows. Though there may have been small theological differences between them, they were essentially alike in many respects.

However, Mark made another astute notation. The Pharisees sought to find another partner in their fight against Jesus. They sought out the Herodians this time round. What strange bedfellows these were.

“Then the Pharisees went out and immediately plotted
with the Herodians against Him, how they might destroy Him.”
MARK 3:6

1. Who were the Herodians?

a) These were Jews with strong political leanings.
b) They were people who supported the political ambitions of the Herodian family.
c) They were people who would do anything for political gain.
d) They were people prepared to sacrifice religious beliefs for political advantage.

2. The Pharisees and the Herodians

a) They were in normal circumstances at odds with each other.
b) The Pharisees in fact despised the Herodians.

3. Joined by a common evil goal

a) They felt compelled that they must destroy Jesus
b) They entered into a pact of collaboration to achieve their common goal!
