Day 80 – Mark 3

“Finally, all of you be of one mind, having compassion for one another.” 1 Peter 3:8a

A MOST PROFOUND ANSWER

The response of Jesus must have caught the multitude by surprise. Few would have been able to come up with this statement.

“But He answered them saying,
‘Who is My mother, or My brothers?’
And He looked around in a circle at those who sat about Him,
and said, ‘Here are My mother and My brothers!
For whoever does the will of God is My brother and My sister
and mother.'”
MARK 3:33-35

1. Was Jesus unfilial to His mother?

The plain and obvious answer would be a resounding “No!”

2. Was He wrong to say what He did?

a) Was He discounting the significance of His mother?
b) Was He disclaiming strong sibling relationships?
The answer to both these questions would also be “Definitely not!”

3. What was Jesus seeking to communicate?

a) He was not saying that He would not find time to be with His earthly family.
b) Neither was He severing ties with His family because of their wrong ideas about Him.
c) He was seeking to teach very vital lessons to the multitude:
i) As much as the family unit is honoured, so He honours all who had faith.
ii) He was suggesting to the multitude that they could be family too.
iii) Whoever did the will of God would be family to Him.

4. A solemn word to the physical earthly family

a) They needed to learn that they had to discover and do God’s will too.
b) In God’s kingdom, physical earthly relationships do not count for much.
c) If they understood what Jesus meant, then they must amend their ways.
