Mark
2 Peter 2:13a "And will receive the wages of unrighteousness, as those who count it pleasure to carouse in the day time."
Day 197 – Mark 9
“And will receive the wages of unrighteousness, as those who count it pleasure to carouse in the day time.” 2 Peter 2:13a
THE MOUNTAIN-TOP EXPERIENCE
It was great to have had such a mountain-top experience! Peter would have liked to have made tabernacles for Jesus, Moses and Elijah. Then they would have been able to stay up in the mountain for a longer period of time. But the Transfiguration experience was to help the Disciples comprehend what Jesus had said earlier about the “glory of His Father” (Cf. Mark 8:38). Surely great power was evidenced when the Disciples saw Jesus transfigured and attended to by Moses and Elijah!
TELL NO ONE
Once again, the Disciples would hear this now-familiar phrase of Jesus.
“Now as they came down from the mountain,
He commanded them that they should tell no one
the things they had seen, till the Son of Man
had risen from the dead. So they kept this word to themselves,
questioning what the rising from the dead meant.”
MARK 9:9-10
1. A commandment to be kept
The Disciples obeyed Jesus. They told no one what they had seen and experienced in the mountain!
2. No full understanding
What could the Disciples have shared anyway?
a) Would anyone believe even if they were to speak of the Transfiguration?
b) Would they be able to explain what a Transfiguration really was?
c) Would they have been able to explain the appearance of Moses and Elijah?
d) How would they have explained what the voice of God sounded like?
3. Rising from the dead
The Disciples were unsure what Jesus meant when He spoke about rising from the dead.
a) The first mention was in the context of His suffering (Cf. Mark 8:31).
b) The second mention confirmed that Jesus believed He would rise from the dead (Mark 9:9).
But the following things were very clear. Jesus was transfigured! The voice of God was heard, declaring Jesus as His beloved Son.
