"The brightness of His glory"

Text: Hebrews 1:3a

THE GLORY OF GOD

The theme of the glory of God was well developed in the Old Testament. The following texts highlight the subject of the glory of God:-

1. At Mount Sinai

“Now the glory of the LORD rested on Mount Sinai, and the cloud covered it six days. And on the seventh day he called to Moses out of the midst of the cloud. The sight of the glory of the LORD was like a consuming fire on the top of the mountain in the eyes of the children of Israel.”

Exodus 24:16-17

2.At the dedication of the Tabernacle

“Then the cloud covered the tabernacle of meeting, and the glory of the LORD filled the tabernacle. And Moses was not able to enter the tabernacle of meeting, because the cloud rested above it, and the glory of the LORD filled the tabernacle.”

Exodus 40:34-35

3. At the dedication of the Temple

“When Solomon had finished praying, fire came down from heaven and consumed the burnt offering and the sacrifices; and the glory of the LORD filled the temple. And the priests could not enter the house of the LORD, because the glory of the LORD had filled the LORD’s house.”

2 Chronicles 7:1-2

THE BRIGHTNESS OF HIS GLORY

The following text exalts Jesus as the Son of God. He is the only One who could be described in this manner.

“Who being the brightness of His glory
and the express image of His person?”

Hebrews 1:3a

1. The brightness of His glory

The Apostle John would heartily agree with this declaration. He himself testified that he had seen the glory that was in Jesus. His observation:-

“And the Word became flesh and dwelt among us,
and we beheld His glory, the glory as of the only begotten
of the Father, full of grace and truth.”

John 1:14

2. The express image of His person

The apostle Paul, would also readily accept this statement concerning the identity of Jesus.

“Let this mind be in you which was also in Christ Jesus.
Who, being in the form of God, did not consider it robbery
to be equal with God.”

Philippians 2:5-6

The author of Hebrews sought with all his might to depict Jesus in all His glory- He was aptly described as One who was the brightness of God’s own glory!
