WRITING BIBLICAL LITERATURE

Every good writer must possess the following things, especially with reference to writing Biblical literature. Two things may be discussed

1. Contents

a) He must have thoroughly researched the contents.
b) He must have a strong sense of mastery of the contents.
c) The heart of the contents in Hebrews centers on the Person of Jesus.

2. Choice of approach

a) Each Biblical scholar is allowed to choose his own approach.
b) The unique approach taken by the author of Hebrews must be noted and appreciated.

He used “comparison” to help him present Jesus in the fullness of His glory!

A SERIES OF COMPARISONS

The following comparisons were made in Hebrews:-

1. Jesus is compared to angels- Hebrews 1

2. He is compared to Moses- Hebrews 3

3. He is also compared to the Levitical priesthood- Hebrews 5

4. The New Covenant of Jesus is compared to the Old Covenant- Hebrews 8

NOT FOR THE PURPOSE OF DISDAIN

The comparisons were not made to disdain the significance of the role of angels, or Moses, or the Levitical priesthood, or the Old Covenant. The comparisons were made to portray Jesus in His fullness of glory! By virtue of who He is and what He has accomplished, He is simply “the best”!

BETTER THAN ANGELS

The first comparison is found in the following text. Jesus is compared to angels and of course He is “so much better than angels”!

“Having become so much better than angels, as He has
by inheritance obtained a more excellent name than they.”

Hebrews 1:4
