"For the suffering of death... "

Text: Hebrews 2:9

A HIGH PURPOSE

Was it necessary for Jesus to put on flesh and become fully man? The answer may be found in the following text.

“But we see Jesus, who was made a little lower
than the angels, for the suffering of death
crowned with glory and honour…”

Hebrews 2:9

1. Born for a high purpose- “for the suffering of death”

Right from the start, the high purpose of Jesus was announced:-

a) He would come and save His people from their sins (Cf. Matthew 1:21).
b) He would be Immanuel [God with us] (Cf. Matthew 1:23)
c) His very name “Jesus” would identify Him with His mission (Cf. Matthew 1:25)

2. Few understood how Jesus would accomplish the above

a) Jesus had a greatly successful ministry (Cf. Matthew 4:23-25; 12:15; 15:31)
b) He began teaching His disciples that He would have to suffer death
(Cf. Matthew 16:21; 17:22-23)
c) His disciples had the greatest difficulty understanding and accepting that their beloved Master must suffer and die.
i) Peter tried to dissuade Jesus (Cf. Matthew 16:22).
ii) Comprehension was hidden from them (Cf. Luke 18:31-34)

3. “Crowned with glory and honour”

Jesus did not fear death. He described it simply as “sleep” (Cf. John 11:11,13).

a) He spoke of His death as an aspect of glory.
i) He had glorified His Father by His life and works (Cf. John 17:4)
ii) He prayed that the hour of His death would also be glorious (Cf. John 17:1, 5)
b) The apostle Paul’s comment on the significance of Jesus’ death is to be noted.

“Therefore God also has highly exalted Him and given Him
the name which is above every name.”

Philippians 2:9
