Day 326

"See that you do not refuse Him who speaks."

Text: Hebrews 12:25

MAKING GOOD AND APPROPRIATE RESPONSES

Making appropriate responses in life is one of the most important skills to cultivate. An inappropriate response is potentially disastrous! An appropriate response would bring about great blessings. Making an appropriate response does not come easily. Many still make poor or wrong choices. The following text warns us of grave danger when we make bad choices.

“See that you do not refuse Him who speaks.
For if they did not escape who refused Him who spoke on earth,
much more shall we not escape if we turn away from Him
who speaks from heaven…”
Hebrews 12:25

1. See that you do not refuse Him who speaks

a) Ultimately it is God who speaks.
b) The prophets of old were but spokesmen for God.

2. Him who spoke on earth

a) The construction of the sentence would suggest that the reference is to a Special Person speaking.
b) If the reference is the apostles then the plural noun would have been employed.
c) This person would have to be none other than the Lord Jesus Christ.
d) There were those who rejected Jesus:-
i) The multitudes rejected Jesus despite seeing His miracles (Cf. John 6:66).
ii) The Jews resisted Jesus stoutly and sought His death (Cf. John 8:24).

3. If we turn away from Him who speaks from heaven

a) To refuse is a dangerous first step.
b) It leads to an even more dangerous second step.
4. They did not escape

The judgment of the Lord is obviously in view here! The grace and mercy of the Lord would all come to an end one day. There would only be the solemn judgment of God left. Wisdom teaches us to make an appropriate response to God when He speaks.
