"By one offering..."

Text: Hebrews 10:14a

POWERFUL RAMIFICATIONS OF CHRIST’S DEATH

There are many powerful ramifications that come from Christ’s offering of Himself. The following text offers a tremendous insight.

“For by one offering He has perfected forever
those who are being sanctified.”
Hebrews 10:14

1. By one offering

a) This is a reference to Christ’s body as that “one offering”.

b) The symbol intended is His death on the Cross of Calvary.

2. The effects of Christ’s offering

a) He has taken away the first covenant (Hebrews 10:9b)

b) He has established the second covenant (New Covenant) [Hebrews 10:9c]

c) All believers are “sanctified” through Christ’s offering of Himself (Hebrews 10:10)

d) He has made full atonement for all our sins (Hebrews 10:12)

3. He has perfected forever

a) An additional thought is introduced here.

b) “Perfected” suggests that no further sacrifice is needed.

c) “Forever” suggests that this work of sanctification is so complete it would last for all eternity.

4. Those who are being sanctified

a) There is no contradiction here.

b) The work of sanctification may be understood in two ways:-

i) With reference to our standing before God- we are “perfected forever”.

ii) With reference to our life on earth- Christ continues to do an important work of sanctifying us as His “holy people”.
