"By faith Moses, when he became of age..."

Text: Hebrews 11:24

THE NURTURING OF MOSES

Moses had two “mothers”. There was his birth mother who was providentially hired to nurture Moses. There was his adopted mother, the daughter of the Pharaoh (Cf. Exodus 2:5-10).

A BOLD DECISION OF FAITH

As Moses grew up, he came to a point when he had to make a decision of faith.

“By faith Moses, when he became of age, refused to be called
the son of Pharaoh’s daughter, choosing rather to suffer affliction
with the people of God than to enjoy the passing pleasures of sin.”
Hebrews 11:24-25

1. By faith, when he became of age

a) We are not told at what age he made this decision.
b) But we do know that this decision was made because of his faith in God.

2. Refused to be called the son of Pharaoh’s daughter

a) Moses stood to lose out if he renounced his rights as Pharaoh’s daughter.
b) He could have risen very high in Pharaoh’s court because he was “a prince of Egypt”.
c) He also refused to “enjoy the passing pleasures of sin”.
i) Court life often involved carnal pleasures.
ii) As a royal prince he could have had anything he desired.
iii) He turned his back on all these “privileges” counting them as “sin”.

3. Choosing rather to suffer affliction with the people of God

a) Moses’ faith saw him identified with “the people of God”.
b) The children of Israel were then enslaved by the Pharaoh.
c) His faith enabled him to find the courage and strength to suffer affliction with the children of Israel.
What a glimpse of the nobility of spirit that can come with faith!
