"By faith the walls of Jericho fell down..."

Text: Hebrews 11:30

FAITH- THE NEXT GENERATION

Moses led the children of Israel faithfully for forty years. All too soon he had to go the way of the earth. But there were others who had caught his spirit of faith. Joshua his successor was certainly a man of faith. One of the most significant expressions of his faith in God was in the conquest of Jericho. Here is a summary of this famous battle.

“By faith the walls of Jericho fell down after they were encircled
for seven days. By faith the harlot Rahab did not perish with those
who did not believe, when she had received the spies with peace.”
Hebrews 11:30-31

1. By faith the walls of Jericho fell down after they were encircled for seven days

a) The walls of Jericho were formidably built to withstand any kind of assault
b) The encircling of the walls of Jericho for seven days would seem ridiculous to any one without faith (what harm could they do to the mighty walls of Jericho?)
c) The encircling of the walls did not bring about their destruction; faith in God and His power did.

2. By faith the harlot Rahab did not perish

a) Rahab hid two spies from Israel.
b) She risked her life in helping them.
c) Somehow she had found faith in the God of the children of Israel and thus helped the spies to escape from Jericho.

3. Those who did not believe

a) The inhabitants of Jericho did not believe that they could be defeated.
b) They believed that their strong walls could not be destroyed.
c) They believed in themselves; certainly they did not possess the faith of Rahab.
d) All perished without the requisite faith

The significance of the place of faith was once again strongly brought out. Moses in his time needed to have faith in God. Joshua also needed to find that same kind of faith. That faith was available. And through that faith great things were accomplished.
