Day 176 – Psalm 56

“I will render praises to You…” Psalm 56:12b

VOWS MADE TO GOD

Vows were allowed in the days of David. Vows were solemn oaths an individual may make to God as part of his prayers. David took his vows seriously!

“Vows made to You are binding upon me, O God;
I will render praises to You.”
Psalm 56:12

1. “Vows”

a) Jacob’s vow to God was a classic one (Genesis 28:20-22).
b) There were offerings with reference to fulfillment of vows (Leviticus 7:16).
c) The largest single text on “Vows” may be found in Ecclesiastes 5:1-7.
d) God challenged His people to offer vows of thanksgiving to Him (Psalm 50:14).

2. “Vows made to You are binding upon me, O God”

a) It would not be too much to believe that David was fully aware of what it meant to make a vow to God.
b) Whatever vow he made to God, he determined that he would keep it.
c) Vows made to God were binding on him.

3. “I will render praise to (God)”

a) The vow that David had in mind may well be what was recorded in Psalm 50:14.
b) God was not so much looking for burnt offerings as thanksgiving.
c) David appeared to have understood this very well.
d) Hence he determined that he would “render praises” to the Lord.
e) David probably made a vow to render praise to God if he was delivered from his enemies!
