Day 20 – Psalm 44

“You are my King, O God…” Psalm 44:4a

A FITTING SPONTANEOUS RESPONSE

Appropriate response to God is always desirable. The following text illustrates what may be described as a fitting spontaneous response.

“You are my King, O God;
Command victories for Jacob.”
Psalm 44:4

1. Bowing the knee in grateful adoration

a) A strong personal response
i) Because of contemplation of the Lord’s hand in Israel’s history.
ii) Whether or not there was a national response, the psalmist(s) made a very strong and wholesome personal response.
b) Acknowledging the Lord
i) As King
ii) As God

2. Praying to God (as Levites)

a) Praying for Israel was part and parcel of Levitical ministry.
b) Remembering the time when God separated the Levites for their special ministry

“At that time the LORD separated the tribe of Levi
to bear the ark of the covenant of the LORD,
to stand before the LORD to minister to Him
and to bless His name, to this day.”
Deuteronomy 10:8

c) Praying that God would command victory for the nation

3. Victories for Jacob

The name “Jacob” was used interchangeably with “Israel”. The use of the former name was always when the writer was most conscious of “weakness” and “sinfulness” of the nation. The Lord had indeed blessed the nation, but not because it was righteous (Deuteronomy 9:4-8, 13, 24).
